National Association of Minority Contractors Southern California Chapter Awards SoCalGas 2022 Major Corporate Partner of the Year

By Sandra Hrna, Vice President Supply Chain and Operations Support

SoCalGas’ Sustainability Strategy aligns with our values, which means doing the right thing, championing people, and shaping the future. A key component of this strategy is prioritizing partnerships with women, minority, LGTBQ, and disabled veteran business enterprises.

We are proud to share the National Association of Minority Contractors Southern California (NAMC-SC) Chapter’s commitment to creating a more inclusive construction industry. For nearly 20 years, SoCalGas has served as a corporate sponsor to NAMC-SC and has awarded several of their members with key contracts, including Alameda Construction, TEC Contractors, and Vobecky Trucking, among others.

Throughout my 21 years at SoCalGas, I have seen SoCalGas’ decades-long commitment to supporting and working with suppliers with diverse backgrounds.

For over 29 years, SoCalGas has exceeded the California Public Utilities Commission’s goal of 21.5% of our company’s suppliers being women, minority, LGTBQ, and disabled veteran business enterprises. I am particularly proud of our diversity efforts throughout the last five years, during which SoCalGas has spent $3.9 billion with diverse business enterprises.

In 2021, SoCalGas set a company record with nearly $1 billion – more than 42% – of all our goods and services being purchased from diverse business enterprises. We are committed to continuing to grow the number of diverse suppliers we work with; earlier this year, SoCalGas released our Sustainability Strategy, which includes achieving a 45% spend with diverse business enterprises by 2025.

We are thrilled to have partnered with 577 diverse business enterprises in 2021 – 105 more diverse partners than we worked with in 2020. These critical partnerships have helped SoCalGas position us as leaders in an innovative industry working to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in our operations and delivery of energy by 2045.

We are proud that our investments in diverse communities have been recognized by various industry partners, including:

  • Southern California Minority Supplier Diversity Council (SCMSDC) honored CEO Scott Drury as the 2022 CEO Diversity Champion
  • Reuters 2022 Business Transformation Award for Sustainable Business Priorities and shortlisted for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion award
  • Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce (GLAAACC) recognized SoCalGas Senior Vice President, Chief Administrative and Diversity Officer Jeff Walker as Corporate Executive of the Year
  • Chinese-American Elected Officials 2022 Business Partner of the Year
  • Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Los Angeles Chapter’s Company of the Year award

In addition to our work with diverse contractors, SoCalGas’ Aspire 2045 sustainability strategy includes a goal to do even more to support diverse suppliers and to invest another $50 million over the next five years in underserved communities. Last year, SoCalGas created impact through $9.6 million in total community investment, with $4.8 million to support health and human services, and $2.3 million to support educational causes. As Vice President of Supply Chain and Operations Support at SoCalGas, I am proud to help position our company as an industry leader in innovation, as well as racial and ethnic diversity representation. We are positioned for even greater impact in the years ahead.
