SoCalGas partners with North East LA Tree Project to Give Free Trees to Watts Residents

Trees to provide cleaner air, green space, shade and produce

At SoCalGas, we’re doing our part to make sure every Californian has clean air to breathe. That’s why we partnered with North East LA Tree Project to give away trees to residents in the Watts area of Los Angeles. The organizations provided 500 fruit and shade trees to residents within the Watts community for free. In turn, the residents can use the trees to create green space, shade and grow their own produce at home.

SoCalGas placed 811 stickers on the trees, as a reminder for residents to call 811 before digging and planting their new trees. 811 is a free service that connects excavators with the Underground Service Alert, who is responsible for notifying utility companies about a planned excavation so they can mark their underground infrastructure and prevent accidental damages.

Another partner in the effort, Watts Rising, is a group of government agencies and non-profit organizations that are working in the community. These organizations are improving the environment, reducing carbon emissions in Watts, creating equity and increasing community engagement.
